The World Health Organization (WHO) has published long-awaited guidelines on the use of salt with lower sodium content, where sodium has been replaced with potassium.
Lower-sodium salts, which partially substitute sodium chloride with potassium chloride, represent an important strategy for reducing sodium intake and lowering the risk of hypertension and cardio-renal-metabolic diseases.
Excessive sodium intake is responsible for up to 1.9 million deaths annually. WHO recommends reducing daily sodium intake to less than 2 g, but the global average remains an alarming 4.3 g per day.
These guidelines provide clear recommendations on the safe use of lower-sodium salt, including guidance on minimizing the risk of hyperkalemia in vulnerable populations, such as individuals with impaired kidney function.
